Juneteenth: On Friday June 19, we celebrate our second National Independence Day, Juneteenth (not all people living in America were free July 4, 1776). On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved African Americans in Galveston Texas learned of their freedom. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. It was the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.
Pride Month, Immigrant Heritage Month, and Caribbean-American Heritage Month: June marks a powerful intersection of celebrations that reminds us that our movements for justice are deeply connected. The campaign for LGBTQ+ equality and the fight for immigrant rights are rooted in the same fundamental belief that every person deserves safety, dignity, family, community, and the freedom to live fully and openly. This June, MIC is proud to stand with LGBTQ+ immigrants and with all communities who are changing the game toward a future in which everyone belongs and everyone is valued.
