Dear friends,
Look, up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane– it’s Superman! This is the iconic line I remember from my childhood. As we enter the summer movie blockbuster season, the media is saturated with the upcoming premieres of the new Superman reboot and the return of the Fantastic Four. For the past ten years and beyond, superhero movies have dominated the Hollywood landscape. I’ve often asked myself the question why? Why are movie audiences so enthralled with superheroes? The superhero genre was first born during the second World War— Superman in 1938 and Wonder Woman in 1942. In challenging times, when we have lost our sense of control, our sense of security, and our sense of humanity, we need something or someone to turn to.
In this newsletter, you will see hope. You will see the heroic work of our MIC partners in stemming the ongoing assault on our immigrant families. You will also see the heroism within our immigrant families– they are not acting like victims but they are rising to the challenge. Recently, while visiting our partner Sociedad Latina, I saw a photo journal depicting immigrants as superheroes, because they are heroes to their families: a window washer dressed up as Spiderman, a house cleaner dressed up as Catwoman. These photos reminded me that the hero exists within each of us.
We need you to be a hero. We need you to provide hope. Please consider giving to our Emergency Assistance Fund featured in this newsletter and on our website. 100% of your donation will support the basic needs of separated immigrant families who have been savagely impacted by ICE.
When I look up in the sky, will I see you?
In solidarity,
